my love of music

top ten albums

I love listening to music. One of the reasons that I am pursuing a career in web design is because it enables me to listen to music as I work. The image below shows my top ten favorite albums. Moving the mouse over each album cover initiates a pop-up description related that that particular album. I have also constructed a gigography (I was piss bored one Friday afternoon and at the time it seemed like a good idea), which is a list of all the gigs I have been to since I embarrassingly saw the Jovi at Milton Keynes Bowl in 1993.... everyone has bands that they regret liking!

Led Zeppelin IV: This is the album that I have loved the longest. I started listening to this album in about 1990 after hearing 'Stairway to Heaven' at a friends funeral. This album is beginning to end pure brilliance, and is always in top hundred best albums of all time.... deservedly so. Pixies - Bossanova: This is often rated as one of the weaker of the Pixies releases. In my opinion there are no weak Pixies albums (any Pixies album could be in this top ten list but then that wouldn't be interesting would it?). Pixies are probably my all time favorite band and this is the album that got me into them. I loved it when I first heard it and today it still holds the same magic. The Cure - Faith: Depressing from start to finish but this early Cure album is by far Robert Smith's masterpiece. Very dark, this is the perfect album to listen to if you are feeling down in the dumps. Frank Black - Self titled: This reminds me of the great summer after finishing Uni in 2000. Frank Black's first solo effort after splitting up the Pixies. At first I thought that this album was nothing special, and dissapointing when compared to Pixies. But the album sank in after 5 or so listens and I couldn't take it out of my cd player. A great place to start if you are interested in listening to Frank's post Pixies work. Elliot Smith - Figure 8: A beautiful album. Elliot Smith created trully beautiful music during his short life. Most Elliot fans will probably disagree with my choice here as many fans prefer 'XO.' But this was the first album I heard of Elliot and it immediately attracted me to his other brilliant works. It's quite sad to listen to this knowing that Elliot is no longer alive.
AC/DC - Powerage: The under-rated and overlooked Bon Scott era masterpiece. This album is just pure rock from start to finish, with no breathing space inbetween. No other heavy rock band can touch Bon Scott era 'DC... This is the 'DC at their peak. David Bowie - Diamond Dogs: This is Bowie at his best. Heavily influenced by Orwell's 1984, it's a cracking album that I listen to a lot when I am web designing. Not much else I can say really, just brilliant! Neil Young - Harvest: It took me a while to get into this album. I decided to give it another spin as I was lying on the beach in Egypt, and I fell in love with it. Again, I am not sure if this is Neil Young's best work (hard to say when he's released so many brilliant albums) but it was the album which made me go out and get more of his stuff... well this and 'Mirrorball.' Grandaddy - Sumday: This is my most recent favorite album. Most of the songs are great, and I love Jason Lyttle's voice. Grandaddy were an amazing band, and all of their studio albums are well worth a listen. It might take you a while to get used to Lyttle's voice though. Metallica - And Justice For All:The best metal album ever written in my opinion. Ferocious and angry, this album has huge energy. Every song is brilliant (except the instrumental, but then again I am not a fan of instrumentals anyway). I'll always back this album as the best that Metallica have done (although 'Master of Puppets' and 'Ride the Lightning' are also excellent).
